Huw 'Moggsy' Morgan plays Eighty Six

This Friday we’ll be keeping a welcome in the hillside as Huw ‘Moggsy’ Morgan returns to play records with us down at Eighty Six.

A lynchpin of the Electriks collective; post Electric Chair, Huw is the man behind the Electric Elephant Festival which takes place each summer out in Croatia, Electrik bar in Chorlton and Manchester’s End of Year Basement Riots.

You can also catch him on a Sunday evening, sat in the comfy armchair down at Electrik; where he hosts his One Deck Sessions.

Moggsy last played Eighty Six at our Christmas Party in 2010 (far too long ago) so we’re pleased that not only is he back playing at Jam St this Friday (3rd February) but he’s also coming into the studio with us on Sunday afternoon for a one hour guest mix on our radio show.

The Superimposers Back On Vinyl?

The Superimposers have a new EP out this week, initially it is only out on CD and as a download, however if there is sufficient demand then they will put out a limited vinyl release.

The EP features new songs People and Besides alongside a remix of Seeing Is Believing by J Walk, hopefully they will have enough interest to make a press of 250 copies on 10" vinyl. An Extra Christmas Present

Due to both Christmas day and New Year's day falling on a Sunday this year we're taking a couple of week's break from the show.

1. Michael Kiwanuka – Tell Me A Tale

- I first heard this on Gilles Peterson’s show and it stood out like a sore thumb in and amongst some really great records that were played that night. Part soul, part Afrobeat, all parts brilliant. Michael is a talent for all ages and there isn’t anything that he has put out that I have even been the faintest bit cold about. Brilliant stuff from someone who if there is any justice in the world will be a household name in 2012.

2. Destroyer – Kaputt

- I bought this at Amoeba as a recommendation from one of the staff there who was very enthusiastic about it almost to the point of annoyance. Brilliant lyrics and an understated groove with probably the only trumpet line I’ll like for years to come. There is something beautifully ethereal about this. An instant classic that I was really pleased to hear the boys on Universal Language play a few days after I made the purchase. It doesn't happen too often that I have a record that they have before they play, afterwards yes, they're costing me a small fortune!

3. Jonathan Wilson – Desert Raven

- This is one that I came to love via this very radio show. I thought it was something that they had dug up in the joyous depths of King Bee or somewhere and I was delighted to find it nestled in and amongst the racks at Amoeba. I have listened to this far more times than I should have and on most days when walking in the mountains up here this is like a warm blanket for the soul.

4. The Stepkids – Santos and Ken

- This is one that grew on me. They don’t exactly fit to the Stones Throw stereotype – but then again what is the Stones Throw stereotype? – but after a few listens I kept on coming back to this one. Not a million miles away from Rubber Soul –era Beatles but drenched in noughties’ psychedelia, and all the better for it. The rest of the album is worth a punt as well.

5. Rough Fields – The Harbour Wall

- I’m not sure how I came across this. Maybe a recommendation from my ex, I can’t remember. Anyway, it really did stand out on what wasn’t exactly the best of EP’s. I love the mood and the pacing of the record. There is something truly sublime about every element of the record and every good record collection digital or otherwise really does need this nestled in.

6. Zomby – Natalia’s Song

- The record I am most jealous of, and probably the record that I listened to the most in 2011 beyond the last one on my relatively hastily assembled list. Zomby is the secretive sort and this record came out on 4AD of all places, but what I love and admire is that he is able to do a hell of a lot with very little. It truly sucks you in and there is a place where I live that you can see all the way to Mexico from over mountains and plains, and I go there every once in a while to watch the sunrise and this is my soundtrack. Absolutely brilliant and granted I do sound like a hippie twat but what can you do? I love this.

7. Peaking Lights – All The Sun That Shines

- There is something truly magical about Peaking Lights. They drench their records in Lee Perry level echo but without taking you to a dirty basement in Brixton with marijuana smoke as thick as pea soup, which to be fair sounds like a good time. I love how this record goes off on a bit of a sidestep and you just follow it along like a cosmic puppy after a clue to where the otherworld weirdness is coming from. I really love this record.

8. The Phenomenal Handclap Band & Marcos Valle - Tudo O Que Você Podia Ser

- The standout track from the new Red Hot + Rio comp, which to be fair is a collection of standouts. To me this is what the summer sounds like. A little slice of absolute perfection. As a side note, I got to meet Bing Ji Ling at Heather’s in New York City and his beard is a thing of beauty.

9. Raphael Saadiq – Go To Hell

- When the gospel choir kicks in this goes from being good to sublime. If I was still a DJ of sorts this would be my last record of the night. I got to see him at Coachella and this was a pure standout for me. This a wonderful piece of music to stir the soul and put a smile across your boat for hours afterwards. It always gets a "rewind" in the car out here.

10. Illum Sphere – One For Dimlite

- Yes I know this came out in 2010 but this is the record that has helped me the most this year. I went through a relatively rough breakup and this is the record that I listened to almost on loop and it always made me smile, and it always took my mind to somewhere happier, and for that it gets into my top 10 for 2011. Thanks, Ryan!

New Years Day and beyond

Eighty Six in Leeds

We've got a big couple of weekends coming up, starting with this weekend when we're joined down at Jam St (Friday 7th) for Eighty Six with Jan Hammered. See below for a rundown on Jan's great work on Test Pressing and with Claremont 56.

Then the day after on Saturday (8th October) we'll be taking the train over the Pennies to play in Leeds.

We've been invited over by Andy Pye who hosts the Balearic Social Radio show to play at Joe's Bakery. Joe's Bakery (promoted by Andy and Craig) takes place monthly at Dock St Market in the Brewery Wharf area of Leeds city centre.

Dock St Market is an independent food and drink space that houses a bakery, deli, restaurant and bar with Mid Century furniture. All this takes place overlooking the River Aire.

Past guests have included Moonboots, Phil Mison the lads from Softrocks and Timm Sure and Ampo from Coyote/is it Balearic?

It looks a great venue and it's got nothing but praise from Moonboots and his partner Sarah. It's a very relaxed 5pm afternoon start moving through to a respectable 11pm finish.

If you're in Leeds or just fancy a trip over the Pennies it would be great to see you. All 3 Eighty Six/ Universal Langauage hosts (Jif, Jeffo and TC) will be playing across the evening.

Jan Hammered returns to Eighty Six

As the leaves turn a lovely shade of Red and Brown and the evening light starts to fade, it's time to welcome back Autumn and the return of Jan Hammered to play Eighty Six.

A man of many talents, Jan is the Dj partner of Balearic Mike at their Night Music and Estrellas nights. While his photographic skills grace the album covers of Mudd's Claremont 56 record label and James Holroyd's Begin project. His mixes are regularly featured on the excellent Test Pressing blog and I've compiled a few links below to get you in the mood for Friday.

We've been struck down with shocking colds and we just don't feel up to recording a show this week. Rest assured we'll be back fighting fit next week with lots of new music.

Nigel Long plays Eighty Six

This month our good friend Nigel Long is making the journey over the pennines from Leeds to join us at Jam Street.

Originally from Knutsford in Cheshire, Nigel moved over to Leeds in the early 90's and opened Bar Oporto on Call Lane, Leeds; a place where we've shared many a pint before heading off to Basics.

Eighty Six play Seek Magic Sunday

Our friends over at Seek Magic, 'a rather good music blog' (The Observer) have put together what looks to be one of the gigs of the year. We're honoured the lads have invited us down to London to play between many of our favourite bands.

This is the first Seek Magic Sunday and it takes place at The Social, Little Portland Street, London W1 on Sunday on 16th October. It brings together Amour De Dias (Alasdair MacLean lead singer with The Clientele and Lupe Núñez-Fernández from Pipas). As big fans of The Clientele we love their first Amour De Dias Lp 'Street of the Love of Days' - it gets regular plays on our radio show.

The Superimposers (Myles and Dan) not only make great music themselves but they also run the excellent Wonderfulsound record label. Joining The Supimposers on stage is prolific musician, writer and producer Shawn Lee (Shawn Lee's Ping Pong Orchestra). As if that's not enough reason to attend, Chorlton's own John Stammers will be playing a solo set.

John's long awaited first LP came out on Wonderfulsound this year and it's a belter. The album launch was held just round the corner from our home and studio and if you've not picked it up yet do so, it's one of the albums of the year (see our review).

Tickets are only ten pounds from the Seek Magic blog. Hope to see you in London for what promises to be a memorable evening.

Snaps from Acoustic Air Raid

In mid August we had the pleasure of playing at The Harvest Sun Acoustic Air Raid Festival.

The event took place in the open air at Luke's bombed out church in Liverpool city centre. We played around the bands on what was a beautiful Sunday in an amazing setting.

Lots of people asked us about the tacks we played including a couple from Belgium who asked about one which turned out to be by the Belgium band 'Soy Un Caballo'. That sort of thing doesn't happen very often so I decided to hand over my spare copy of the 7" single.

Many thanks to James and Tom from Harvest Sun for putting on such a great event.

Eighty Six play Harvest Sun 'Acoustic Air Raid' Festival

This Sunday, August 14th we'll be over in Liverpool playing in a truly fantastic landmark setting.

Harvest Sun will be hosting their annual summer one day festival 'Acoustic Air Raid' in St Luke's Church.

Known locally as 'the Bombed out Church' it stands overlooking Bold St, Berry St, Renshaw St and Leece St in the city centre. The church was hit by an incendiary bomb dropped by the Luftwaffe during Second World War seven day Liverpool Blitz. The Gothic masterpiece, now a shell was purchased in 1968 by the city council and turned into a peace garden for the people of Liverpool to enjoy.

Harvest Sun will be setting up stage inside the church for an afternoon of 'Acoustic, Cosmic, Americana and folk'. We'll be playing before, between and after the bands. The event runs from 2pm -8pm and admission is £5 with Children in free. Fully licensed bar on site.

After two week's off for a short summer break and a Sunday spent at the Trent Bridge Test Match, we're back on Purple Radio this Sunday afternoon from 3.30- 5.30pm.

This Friday (5th August) we're joined by Tom and Will from Manchester's aA (akoustik Anarkhy ) record label and club night.

Formed in 1999 (12 long years ago) the boys' have been on a constant mission to release quality music and put on gigs with bands they love.

They've taken their night all over the back rooms of Manchester and down to London, Brighton and across a number of European cities; notching up over 50 releases on their record label in the process.

Their last two residencies on home turf have been at The Deaf Institute and The Castle where they've hosted many a great night including a Christmas Psych party with Richard Norris (Time & Space Machine), The Ruby Suns, Yellow Moon Band, Fujiya & Miyagi, Speck Mountain, The Phantom Band, The Superimposers, Sleepy Suns, Plank! and their latest signings, Driver Drive Faster.

They've also been involved with several small festivals such as Friends of Mine and The Trip. You can catch some of the bands on their label (and see the boys' DJing) at 'Greetings from the Beacons' 11-14 August. aA will be hosting the 'Outdoor Shed Stage' from 5-11pm on the Saturday night.

Tindersticks Claire Denis Film Scores

We're very pleased to find out that Tindersticks are playing at the Bridgewater Hall on October 18th, the gig will feature them playing tracks from the film scores they have composed for the french filmaker Claire Denis backed by projections of scenes from the films.

The film scores were released earlier this year as a rather pricey but appealing boxset on Constellation records and we're looking forward to what should be an excellent gig.

Orwell

Last night we had the pleasure of going over to Liverpool to see Orwell perform live. Orwell are a french band, put together by Nancy based Jerome Didelot and are now in the UK promoting their fourth album Continental.

Orwell first came to our attention around 18 months ago via a series of reinterpretations of eighties tracks by the likes of New Musik, Freur and The Psychedelic Furs and Au-Dessus De Moi from their 2007 album Le Genie Humain is a big favourite of ours.

Their music is lush, almost orchestral pop with great arrangement and musicality. Despite only travelling as a two-piece and therefore having to utilise loops and samples on the more complex songs they gave a very warm, engaging and thoroughly enjoyable performance. We'd strongly recommend catching any of their remaining gigs of the next few days and big thanks to James and Tom from Harvest Sun for putting them on in Liverpool.

Flaming June they say? well it's fitting then that this month we're joined by the lads from Harvest Sun.

Tom and James are the promoters behind Harvest Sun and they've been putting Liverpool back on the map recently with a steady stream of gigs in amazing locations.

The lads were brought together by a love of music and a desire to see their favourite bands play in their home city. They kicked things off with an open air gig in St Luke's bombed out church. Followed it up with a string of gigs (Midlake, The Clientele, The Superimposers, The Soundcarriers) in the Williamson Tunnels and Edwyn Collins in Liverpool Cathedral.

Gigs by Gruff Rhys, Wooden Shjips, Tula, Hannah Peel (Static Caravan), High Llamas, Colorama, John Grant and a Bella Union showcase for Liverpool Sound City further highlight their great taste in music and an ability to make things happen.

We're looking forward to having them nip down the M62 and play some of their favourite tunes for you in Jam St this Friday.

A Few Current Favourites

Just thought we'd share a few current favourite songs with you. First up is a track from Pechenga's new album Helte Borte on Smalltown Supersound, this is called Gitaro and is a beautiful piece of chilled out instrumental music:

Next is a song by Alessi's Ark, this is from the album Time Travel, the song is called Wire and is a lovely bit of folk tinged pop:

The Leisure Society are a favourite band of ours and have a new album out called Into The Murky Water (with an ace cover on the vinyl release featuring a cutout of a diver), this isn't a track from the album but is the b-side to the current single, it's a cover of The Telescopes song Flying:

Next is probably our favourite record of the year, Birds by Torn Sail. This stunning Claremont 56 release was played by Moonboots as an exclusive when he guested on our show earlier this year. It starts off very reminiscent of The Byrds or a David Crosby track.

I first heard Balearic Mike play this at Stretch Disco and instantly wanted to know what it was. Imagine Washed Out crossed with Sly Mongooses: Snakes and Ladders and you're there! LA Duo Poolside's combination of catchy chorus, Pianos and acid squelches over a chugging disco baseline = Summer anthem alert.

Eighty Six play the One Deck Sessions

We're pleased to announce that on Sunday 1st May we'll be playing 'The One Deck Sessions' at the Unabombers 'electrik' bar in Chorlton.

Music starts at 7pm and goes on till late with the added bonus of Monday being a bank holiday. We've not played at 'electrik' since December and we're really looking forward to all three of playing together for a full night in one of our favourite bars.

We'll also be live on Purple Radio first from 3.30-5.30pm on Sunday afternoon before we head down to electrik.

It's a busy weekend for us, we're down in London on Friday playing at Royal Wedding Reception after party. William has been a big 'Balearic fan' since his mother gave him some mix tapes she brought back from Ku in the mid 80's so it's nice to be invited along to play. If we don't see you at the wedding, hopefully we'll see you on Sunday.

It's shaping up to be a great weekend in the sun.

Balearic Mike plays Eighty Six

It's no joke, this Friday 1st April, our good friend Balearic Mike makes a very welcome return visit to play Eighty Six at Jam St.

This very saintly picture of Mike was taken when he was a guest on our radio show last month. If you missed the show you can listen again to Mike preaching the gospel of Balearica on our Universal Language Radio show.

It was a really enjoyable show with Mike playing a number of new and world exclusive CDR's from Smith & Mudd, Begin, Bing Ji Ling, Mountaineer. As ever when Jeffo and Mike are in the same room there was lots of laughter.

If you fancy a few pints and some good music, it'd be great to see you on Friday. It's our friend Gilly's birthday so expect lots of lovely ladies too - see.... you're interested now.

Eighty Six play The Trip

We're pleased to announce we'll be playing the Trip Festival this summer. The festival is three day family friendly event which takes place in Bangor, North Wales from 27-29th May.

We played at their first festival last summer, held on the island of Anglesey and it was a great weekend.

This year the team have moved site to the equally picturesque surroundings of Vaynol, a site set out on 1000 acres of walled parkland, gardens and agricultural estate on the banks of the Menai straights in Bangor.

The line up so far has got a great selection of up and coming bands and a mixture of DJ's, many of which you'll be familiar with if you listen to our radio show or come down to Jam St.

I'm really looking forward to seeing Welsh band Colorama, and seeing 60's folk legend Beverley Martin play on the Sunday.

There's also a healthy smattering of bands that have been involved with the excellent Harvest Sun nights in Liverpool alongside artists signed to Manchester's Red Dear Club.

With more acts and DJ to be confirmed, it's shaping up nicely. Tickets are available with special offers for families from the festival website.

Clive Tanaka y Su Orquestra - Jet Set Siempre No1

Jet Set Siempre No1 was originally released last year on cassette only, but this mini LP has now received a vinyl release on beautiful turquoise vinyl. Side A is upbeat and labelled 'For Dance' whereas the B side is alot more relaxed and is labelled 'For Romance'.

The four tracks on the dance side are 80s influenced electro-pop with vocoder vocals, but it's the romance tracks on the B-side with their instrumental soundscapes that I prefer, particularly the repetitive hook of Skinjob and orchestral sounds of International Heartbreaker.

Penguin Cafe

Just after we started the blog around two years ago I wrote an article about Penguin Cafe Orchestra and how Simon Jeffe's son Arthur had reformed the band and was touring.

Two years on, Penguin Cafe have released an album of new material A Matter Of Life... and are on tour again supported by Portico Quartet. We caught the second date of the tour at the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester.

To be honest I wasn't sure what to expect, could a revival of the original tracks live up to the original orchestra? What would the new material be like? I have to say I was pleasantly surprised, the band are obviously a talented group of musicians and every track was delivered with excellent timing and the original material was performed not as slavish copies but with their own re-workings that still retained the beauty of the originals. The new material also showed promise, even if it was lacking a little in the type of standout tracks that can be found in the back catalogue. It's well worth catching one of the remaining dates on the tour though if you can.

John Stammers

John Stammers is an artist we first came across about three years ago, it therefore comes as a bit of a surprise that his self titled album to be released on The Superimposers' Wonderfulsounds label next month, is his first full length release.

We've been lucky enough to get our hands on an advance copy, so as well as airing some of the tracks on our show over the next few weeks, we thought we would share our thoughts on the album as a whole.

John has in the past been labelled 'The mancunian Nick Drake', this is always going to be a difficult comparison to live up to, but from the album you can definitely see where the comparison came from. However to cast John as just a copy of Nick Drake would also be unfair on him.

The album although folk-led also contains elements of blues, jazz and country, the songs are a mix more traditional arrangements on the likes of Idle I'm and Your Good Is As Guess As Mine and more modern arrangements on tracks such Mother and Here Again. Throughout the album the quality of musicianship and John's voice stand out, overall we'd say it's an album that's been worth the wait and one I suspect we'll be going back to for a long time to come.

Universal Language joins Purple Radio

Whilst recording the show last week we received a very nice email from Purple Radio. They've been listening to the podcasts and have offered us a slot on their station. We're going to be on between 3.30 and 5.30pm every Sunday evening.

For those that don't know much about Purple Radio, they won internet radio station of the year in 2009 and came runner up in 2010.

The station is built around a community of music loving friends and looking at the schedule for Sundays, I'd say we'll feel right at home.

We're really pleased about this invitation to join them, it allows us to reach a wider audience without compromising or changing the show.

We'd like to thank all of you who have helped spread the word in the last 3 months since we set up our studio.

Gayngs - Relayted

Relayted, the first album by Minneapolis based group Gayngs, is an album that kind of passed me by when it cam out in May last year and I didn't pick up on it until it featured in various end of year charts. Gayngs were formed by Ryan Olson and feature a grand total of 23 musicians from various other bands, including Justin Vernon and Mike Noyce from Bon Iver, I guess this makes them a kind of indie supergroup.

The sound of the album is inspired by 70s soft rock, the band particularly state 10cc's I'm Not In Love as a point of reference. Every track on the album is at an identical 69bpm and the sound features a lot of studio processing, giving it quite a soulful, funky feel as well. Particular stand out tracks are the amazing Gaudy Side Of Town and Ride but there are plenty of other good tracks such as Crystal Rope and Spanish Platinum and their cover of Godley & Creme's Cry.

The Return of Hedge

This Saturday 15^th January Manchester’s Hedge night returns for a very special one-off happening at The Band on The Wall.

If you don’t know much about Hedge, it was a monthly event held in The Carlton Club in Whalley Range and ran for about 4 years. You got to see a real eclectic mix of artist, whilst enjoying cheap Polish beers and a chance to pick up some homemade CDR’s on the way out. All this took place in the faded grandeur of a Victorian cotton merchants villa.

Hedge also ran ‘Hedgefest’ a mini festival crossed with a village fete at St Margaret's Church during the summer. James Yorkston, Soy un Caballo, Rue Royal, James Blackshaw, Nancy Elizabath, David A Jaycock, Denis Jones, Liz Green , Pete Greenwood, Starless and Bible Black, The Owl Service The Travelling Band, Emma Tricca, Hannah Peel and Colorama have all played.

This Saturday’s return concert takes place at the newly refurbish Band on the Wall in the Manchester's Norther Quarter. The show features a Manchester headline show for Sam Carter, plus guest performances from Liam Bailey, Nancy Elizabeth, Aidan Smith along with Jo and her husband (who started off Hedge) as Cortina Deluxx.

In keeping with the original Carlton club vibe this will be a seated event with tables table cloths flowers and sweets on your table. Music starting at 7pm although the venue's Picturehouse Cafe Bar is open from 5.30pm for food and drinks.

As a special offer if you book your meal in advance you get a free 'lucky dip' tickets for a future concert. Fingers crossed we'll win one for the Fence collective night with King Creosote on February 25th.

Happy New Year to you all!

Many thanks to Rob, Richard, Jim & David for playing records at our New Year's Day special and to everyone who came down and made it such a good night. There was a lovely atmosphere in Jam Street and it was great not to have the bun fight that is New Year's Eve to worry about. Although to be honest, I was still recovering from playing at and partying rather hard at the Electric Chair End of Year Riot.

This Friday we're back at Jam Street for our first regular Eighty Six of 2011. We're are joined by Nancy Elizabeth, Nancy is probably better known for her singing and songwriting so it's a pleasure that she's agreed be our first guest of the year.

She'll be playing at the Band on the Wall next weekend as Whalley Ranges legendary folk and acoustic night Hedge returns to Manchester.

Nick Howard's End of year chart

We've really enjoyed doing our radio show since we moved into our own studio. One of the nice things about the show is that we get to share so much great music that could easily slip under the radar.

We regularly chat with Nick from on the South Coast so I asked him to sent in his end of year chart. Nick has DJ'ed at various nights and parties in Wolverhampton and across the West Midlands. From the early nineties he's been running his own nights, playing house, disco and Balearic stuff… until moving down South about 3 year's ago. He's put some great stuff in his chart including a few pieces that we didn't have time to play on our end of year's and also some stuff I need to check out. Nick is about to become a proud Dad but if he does get any free time we'd more than happy host a selection of his music.

Linda Perhacs - Parallelograms

Linda Perhacs released a single album of psychedelic rock back in 1970, Parallelograms. Until recently the album has been extremely rare but the label Mexican Summer has reissued it as a limited release, the album contains a number of excellent tracks so is well worth getting hold of if you can.

Rob Bright, sundown at the Electric Elephant

It's a great honour for us to be given this mix by Rob Bright at this years Electric Elephant Festival. To set the scene, here are a few words and pictures from him to accompany a stunning mix.

Petrcane has some of the most amazing sunsets you can see, so I wanted to try and show it some respect. This was the last night of the festival, and most other DJs on the Beach Bar that week had simply carried on playing dance music through the sunset, which many of us thought was a little disappointing, so I guess this was The Last Chance Salon for a proper atmospheric sundown session. Also, I'd never really had the chance to do one before - tried it in Ibiza about 10 years ago, but a crowd of ravers moaned like fuck. Electric Elephant was a different proposition. I'd probably do it completely different tomorrow, but this is exactly where my head was at on that day.

Jed and Lucia - Apostrophe

Jed and Lucia - Apostrophe / April Showers is a new limited edition 10" single on Ubiquity Records with only 300 copies available. It's a beautiful slice of summery pop music and comes complete with a Shawn Lee remix of Apostrophe.

We hope to have another edition of our radio show on the podcast later this week and this track will be a contender for our record of the week alongside other great new releases like the remixes of The Popes on Claremont 56 and the Cantoma remixes on Leng.

Findlay Brown: it's good to have you back

Findlay Brown is back with a lovely acoustic folky version of the classic Joe Smooth House anthem 'Promised Land'. I'm a real sucker this record in all its guises; heck, I even like the Paul Weller version.

We saw first Findlay play at the Greenman Festival in 2007 the year his debut album 'Seperated By the Sea' came out on Peacefrog. The albums still a big fave of ours on the radio show, in fact I'd say it's got even better with age. If you don't know it give it a listen.

His second album 'Love Will Find You' (recorded with ex-Suede man Bernard Butler kind of passed me by a bit but I've fallen in love with his version of the Economy Wolf record 'Theme From Yellow Kudra' which came out as a 7" B side earlier this year. (No video clip but I've put in link where you can listen and buy it). I'd heard that he had moved to New York with his girlfriend and also that he'd been involved in car accident outside one of his gigs. It's great that Findlay's back putting out music again, covers or not, welcome back.

A little bit of history:

I've gone to so many nights where James has been DJing, it's hard to know where to start but I thought I'd try and put something together ahead of his gig at Eighty Six.

A native Yorkshireman James started off at the now legendary Leeds clubnight Back To Basics. I first saw him playing at the venues original home of The Music Factory around 1992 alongside Huggy, Ralph Lawson and the late Ali Cooke. When Basics moved to the Pleasure Rooms in '94 James and Huggy played the music I enjoyed the most in the basement and on the middle floor, so much in fact that we often stayed on to see their early morning appearances in the main room, as the Leeds Sunday morning sun rose across the dance floor.

It was during the early years at Basics that James (Boggy to his mates) moved over the Pennines to Manchester, where he attended college. Whilst in Manchester he took up another residency, this time joining Rob Bright and Richard Hector-Jones at another club that would also go onto legendary status, Bugged Out!

Rob Bright, brilliant as ever at the last Eighty Six:

In 1993 Bugged Out! started out at Sankey's Soap in Ancoats. The area (and the club) looked very different to how it does today. Based in a former Soap warehouse, Sankey's was surrounded by disused warehouses and the odd burnt out car. It's no wonder the Detroit and Chicago DJ's who played there felt so at home or that the taxi drivers looked so worried when they drove you up there.

Sankey's (mark1) went into liquidation so homeless, Bugged Out! moved down the M62 to Nation (home of Cream) in Liverpool. The crowds got larger and the DJ bookings turned into a regular who's who of electronic music. There was no getting away from it Bugged Out! had became a huge success and even the clubs fanzine 'Jockey Slut' went into the stratosphere, growing into a proper magazine that sat alongside Mixmag in WH Smiths.

The era of super-clubs was well a truly upon us and James became the Chemical Brothers tour DJ of choice, warming up for the band in front of huge crowds across Europe and North and South America. He appeared on Radio 1's Essential mix a number of times and with Bugged Out! he spent couple of summers in Ibiza, holding a Summer long residency at Amnesia and went onto tour Japan, Malaysia and Australia.

Back to the basements:

When Manchester's Electric Chair started off in the summer of 1995 James was one of the first DJ's to play at the tiny Roadhouse. Always an incredibly popular guest, when the Chair moved to the larger Music Box on Oxford Road, James continued to play for them (sometimes being reunited with Rob Bright) at the Electric Souls events and End of year Riots.

An incredibly versatile DJ James can adapt his musical styles across not just house and techno, he's also played at the Balearic bastions of Ibiza's Cafe Del Mar and has been a regular at Manchester's Aficionado. James' career has pretty much mirrored our own clubbing history, moving from small clubs, through to super-club boredom and returning back again to the underground of the basements.

Anyway, that's enough of the history lesson, James is producing some brilliant stuff at the moment.

We loved the the sun kissed 'Begin remix' of Sam Sallon's 'You May Not Mean to Hurt Me' which came out earlier this year. His first single of original work as 'Begin' did not disappointed either. The excellent 12" 'Optical Holiday' (Parts 1 and 2) was one of our favourites over the summer getting many plays on our radio show and down at Jam St.

It's great news that he's gone back into the studio so soon. The new 'Begin' single 'Velocity' was played by Balearic Mike when he did the Beats in Space radio show in New York last month and Moonboots also played it after the excellent Superimposers gig in Chorlton. It's a lovely dreamy Brazilian sounding track that's sure to bring a touch of warmth to any cold winter evening; just like the man himself.

It's sure to be a great night so if you fancy joining us it would be great to see you. As ever it will be a relaxed vibe with music starting around 8 and finishing at 1pm.

We'll also be celebrating TC's birthday so if the sound system fails, we'll just let Boggy do some stand up.

We're pretty well known for championing new music on the radio show and down at our monthly night at Jam St Cafe. With this in mind and the fact that we have a weekly radio show we thought it was only fitting that we'd have a 'record of the week' slot.

To make this bit more exciting we've put a twist on it. We'll play our record week every week on the show around 1.30pm every Sunday; then once a month, we'll put the vote out to the listeners and here on the blog for Record of the Month.

Released for the first time on 7" and on White vinyl too. Recorded from the original master and lovingly extended by the Homophono team which includes Aficionado's Jason Boardman. Only 500 pressed and we warned you at the time they would not be around for long. A real collectors piece.

The Hundred in the Hands: Young Ain't Young

The Hundred In The Hands are Brooklyn’s Eleanore Everdell and Jason Friedman, and this is a track taken from their self-titled debut album. It's an emotionally charged long player, calling on everything from the elegant French pop of Serge Gainsbourg, female harmonies of Au Revoir Simone and the late 80s Balearic sound of Andy Weatherall's productions for One Dove.

Pacific Horizons: The Forest Electric

We put the first Pacific Horizons debut EP "Universal Horizons" in our list of top tunes of the summer. Jeffo played it at the Trip Festival and it's caused many a summer air punching moment. If you don't know them, Pacific Horizons are a band from the LA area, and have that distinct West Coast feel to their music. This is their second release (that we know of) and "The Forest Electric" is the track Jif played on the show a couple of weeks ago. It hints at that mid - late 70s dreamy soft rock Fleetwood Mac vibe but still with a good bit of Balearic chugg. No video at the moment so you'll have to make do with this Soundcloud link.

The Radio Dept: Never Follow Suite

Taken from the eagerly anticipated Swedish indie pop album "Clinging To A Scheme". Jeffo's already played 'Never follow Suit' a few times on the show and also out at electrik bar and Jam St Cafe. He got an early copy from the record label so we decided that in the week of its proper release it was only fitting that it should be our record of the week. Look out for the great vocal sample in the middle which is lifted from from the 80's hip- hop documentary/film, Style Wars.

Sorry it's been so long since we posted up anything up on here, I thought I'd better fill you in with what we've been up to.

If you follow our podcasts or live in the Manchester area you may know we're been broadcasting on Unity Radio 92.8FM for the last few weeks. The station official launch is at 9.28 on Friday December 10th and as a specialist show we've been given the opportunity to broadcast on Sundays' between 1-3pm. Call it a pre-launch warm up if you like. Anyway, it's a big step for us with new equipment, show plans, regular meetings and training sessions all talking up our free time. If you fancy listening to these practice shows (remember, they are just that) they're here as Podcasts.

There are more changes planned to the studio set up, (which will hopefully improve our show even more), once these are done and we're comfortable, we've got some cracking guests lined up. Stick with us it'll be worth the wait.
